Plus Size Fashion for Canadian Women

July 3, 2020 By: Kim Willis

Hey there! Are you like me, a Canadian woman, who heard that one of our plus size stores is closing? Finding it difficult to shop being a plus size? I’ll admit, I’m quite bummed to hear that Addition-Elle, yes Addition-Elle is closing, along with Thyme (our only maternity store that carried plus size clothing). And being in Canada, we know we don’t have the choices like the US has (a tad jealous here). So I want to write this to hopefully share some plus size stores with you, and please please PLEASE share some in the comments!

A lot of the plus size stores I will be posting are mostly stores you can order online (because, we don’t always have everything nearby). Some I will have shopped, but most, no, not yet anyways. But at least we’ll try to get as much fashion for everyone because that’s what I love, finding different styles. I’m more of a laid-back jeans and t-shirt kind of girl, while others rock the dresses and business outfits. So, let’s see if we can please everyone shall we. Let’s get to some plus size stores.

ALL 67

Not familiar with All 67, but it sells high quality leather and suede. I can’t confirm if it is true to size. They are in the pricier range, but leather is always pricier, so you have to expect that.

ANNA SCHOLZ

Very new to me, I was searching and found this site. Anna Scholz is a designer company with gorgeous, stylish outfits. I can’t tell you if it’s true to size, or if there are any duty fees, but the shipping seems reasonable.

ANTHROPOLOGY

Anthropology carries both regular and plus size clothing. They seem to be more bohemian chic, but it can be the style right now. They seem to be on the pricier side, but still possible to find some great deals.

ASHLEY NEIL TIPTON

Very cute styles, Ashley Neil Tipton is geared for those fashionistas who love dressing up and feeling cute. I don’t know if they are true to size, but they have some super cute things.

AUBAINERIE

Aubainerie is a Canadian company that doesn’t have a huge line of plus size, but if you wear an XXL, then you can fit. But I find the choices to be limited, which, we need more options right? But definitely one to stop by if you fit in an XXL. I don’t kow if it’s true to size, I believe it’s close.

BOOHOO

A plus size clothing that I have never had the chance to try, Boohoo seems to carry some extremely fashionable outfits. It’s really for that fashionista in you. I have no sense of style and don’t know how to carry myself, so I don’t see myself rocking these like most women. I just heard from my cousin that they are true to size. There might be some duty fees, but I’m not 100%. So many things have changed since last time I shopped US. I mean, Torrid no longer has duty fees, so maybe they don’t either?

CITY CHIC

A very chic plus size clothing store, City Chic will have some really cute, stylish outfits. It’s been years since I shopped from City Chic and I think they were true to size, or at least close? But it’s really dressy and I just don’t feel comfortable (don’t ask why, might be the weird in me) But it is super fashionable. There might be one set back, shipping and duty fees. But again, it’s been a while, so I can’t confirm anymore. If you love dresses, check out that site, seriously! It is on the pricier end though, but it’s style and quality, it’s City Chic 🙂

CHARLOTTE RUSSE AND URBAN PLANET

Charlotte Russe and Urban Planet are geared for a younger audience, Gen Z and Millenials, to look fashionable (You guys are so lucky, in my day, we basically had mumus and all the ugly styles when we were plus size). I can’t tell you if it’s true to size unfortunately since I have never shopped from here. I did add Charlotte Russe and Urban Planet together because honestly, they look exactly the same, so probably from the same company.

CLAIRE FRANCE

Claire France I find them more business/casual, so perfect for work. I remember buying a dress there, I am so fussy on dresses, but I actually felt pretty. The way it was made really complimented my shape (which is more concentrated in my tummy).

DAY WON

An athletic store for plus size women, because it’s not always easy to find comfortable and fashionable workout outfits. Day Won has everything you need to get fit fashionably. Because I have never shopped here, I can’t confirm if it’s true to size. It is, although, a Canadian company where the products are made in the US with recycled material.

ELOQUII

Eloquii is a company that takes what’s trending and gives us plus size a chance to be just as stylish. They seem to have a style for almost everyone, from chic, to comfy. I have never shopped here, so I can’t tell you if it’s true to size.

GIANT TIGER

I never knew until just today that you can now shop at Giant Tiger online. So that’s a plus size bonus. It is affordable clothing, but unfortunately I can’t tell you if it’s true to size because I don’t have a Giant Tiger nearby and haven’t had the opportunity to go.

GOOD AMERICAN

Ok you fashionistas that follow the Kardashians and love their style. Here is Khloe’s line, Good American that will allow you to be your own beauty bombshell. This line of clothing screams confidence. Unfortunately, I can’t tell you if it’s true to size, but I do see that duties are calculated at checkout (bonus) so no surprise fees after.

H&M

I have yet to shop from H&M but they seem to have some really nice clothes. Is it true to size? Maybe, I’m hoping someone on here will share their opinions.

JOE FRESH

I’m kind of excited with this plus size option. Why? Because Joe Fresh is part of Optimum points which also lets you shop in Maxi, Shopper’s Drug Mart or any store that collects Optimum points. So basically, shop for your outfits, and do your groceries for free. Or vice versa. I just discovered this site, so I don’t know if it’s true to size but, it’s affordable and makes your groceries more affordable too.

KITTY CANUCK

Kitty Canuck is a vintage, pinup style, curvy and trendy Canadian store that needs to have a shoutout. They have the most gorgeous pinup outfits. From what I remember, they are made smaller, so you do have to check the sizing chart. But maybe a size smaller, nothing drastic. They are absolutely cute.

LA FEMME FATALE

La Femme Fatale is a Canadian site located in Nova-Scotia and was recommended to me by a friend. I don’t know if it’s true to size, the prices are plus size prices, and the clothes seem super nice. You can also check out their Facebook page here.

LAURA PLUS

Laura Plus is a very stylish, chic store. Great for special events (example Prom) and business attire. It is true to size, and more on the pricey side, but extremely professional. Gorgeous clothes and amazing quality.

LOFT

Another new store to me (I’m seriously discovering so many as I’m sharing this with you) but Loft seems to have really cute things at a reasonable price.

MAURICES

Maurices is another plus size store that has great fashion, I find it similar to Torrid, but honestly, I only shopped from there once and unfortunately, went too big. Again, this store is true to size, so do NOT shop up, unless you’re looking for that really extra room look.

MODCLOTH

Modcloth appears to be for that stylish younger generations who loves vintage. They seem to be following todays’ trends. I don’t know if it’s true to size.

MONIF C.

Monif C. Is some resiously sexly lingerie. Like, seriously, holey hawt tamales. If you want to please your man, woman, or just your darn self, then check this site out. I don’t know if it’s true to size.

NAVABI

I don’t know this store, so I don’t know if it’s true to size. But Navabi seems to give you the option to buy for your shape (which is really cool). It does seem to be for a more mature or conservative audience.

OLD NAVY

Old Navy, true to size, and more of a laid-back fashion. Sure, you can definitely get some cute dresses, and maybe some pants that aren’t jeans, but this store is focused on comfort. The material is thinner though, so I don’t find it lasts as long, BUT, it’s affordable and when the sales are on, watch out. I honestly love shopping for my kids on here, and have bought in the past for me.

PENNINGTONS

Penningtons is more for mature women I find, it has an older audience, which is what we also need, plus size does not stop at a certain age. But they have the same amazing bras as Addition-Elle did, I am so picky with my bras, the only comfortable ones have been from Addition-Elle so this is important. Penningtons is true to size.

ROSSY

Rossy is a company Quebecois, and is like a Giant Tiger, it has different items at a more affordable price. They do have a small selection of plus size clothing and is maybe a bit smaller than true to size. You’d have to try, but it would maybe be like one size too small, it’s not drastic.

SHEIN

I have never shopped at Shein‘s but I did recently see a post from a girl in a girl’s only group who was selling her clothes she received because she bought way too big. So I believe some may be true to size? But please don’t quote me 100%. I also heard the delivery wasn’t that bad, but again, I never experienced shopping from them.

SWIMSUITS FOR ALL

I don’t know if you’re like me, but I hate shopping for Swimsuits. But Swimsuits for All seems to have a HUGE variety so at least you have options. I don’t know if it’s true to size since I have never shopped there.

THIGH SOCIETY

Not a typical clothing site, Thigh Society offers garments to avoid thigh chafing. This is not shapewear, but boxer briefs. They are light and breathable so you can even wear them during these hot days. Thigh Society is also a Canadian company.

TORRID

One of my favourite plus size stores is Torrid. I think I shop on this site once a year minimum. They often have great deals, so when you get those deals, do it. Yes, you pay shipping, BUT at least duty fees no longer exist because they pass through the store in Toronto. And if you’re in Toronto, go check it out!

This store is true to size, and has many styles. Every time I visit this site, I just want to shop (like just now while I was getting the link)

UNIVERSAL STANDARD

Another site I don’t know, Universal Standard seems to have a nice variety of clothing options for plus size women. They seem to be on the pricier end, but I don’t know if it’s true to size.

WALMART

Yes, Walmart carries a selection of plus size clothing. Walmart has a lot of everything, but I find the selections to be minimum. Maybe it’s depending on the Walmart, some are Superstores, others are smaller. Definitely worth taking a look since they are very affordable.

RAKUTEN

Finally, Rakuten is NOT a store, but it is a site that will help you get cash back on a lot of these stores. They will also help you find more online stores. This is definitely a must to add to your shopping experience, HELLOOO cash back?? I have collected so much and it’s so easy. You click on Rakuten, pick your store, and they bring you there. If you buy, a few days later you have your cash back. That easy.

let me know what you think of these stores, if you have shopped through them and which ones are your favs. And yes, please mention more so I can add them to the list. Plus size equals stylish too.

Take care!

    I’M EXCITED ABOUT THIS BLOG!!!

I am an avid Giant Tiger shopper!!!! I find amazing clothes for both work and dress up occasions! They are true to size. If i wear 2x at Pennington for example, it is also a 2x at GT!! You can also find bathing suits, bras and panties, pyjamas and jackets! Its my go to store!

I also want to add that Walmart has a plus size section!

And also, for you lovely plus size ladies that have a hard time finding shoes for wide feet or larger calves, Pennington has an amazing variety of shoes and boots now!!! (Wait until they go on sale 😉 its really worth it! And if you have a CAA card its an extra 10% off, some exclusion apply)

Right? I feel like this is a must to really help us find clothes that give us confidence and makes us feel like us. We don’t all carry the same style, so at least we know we have a HUGE selection!
